You might wonder why Google would be so interested in making apps for a platform which its Android is directly in competition with! Why not just make apps only for Android?
When Google Maps app came out recently for the new iPhone 5, it quickly became the most downloaded app in a matter of days. Of course, one of the most important reasons for its popularity was that Apple Maps had gotten pretty bad publicity.
Google Maps superior to Apple Maps
According to an estimate, Google Maps for the iPhone was downloaded more than 10 million times in the 48 hours after its release last December. Apple Maps had proven to be quite unreliable in many instances, so much so that the Australian police dubbed it as unsafe and warned people not to depend on it.
Google Maps is not the only popular app Google has released for the iPhone. It has also done a lot of work in coming out with a YouTube app, and a Chrome browser for the iOS platform.
Most people invariably consider Android and Apple smartphones when they are about to purchase a new smartphone.
iPhone users are potential customers
If iPhone users happen to use a plethora of Google apps, it is actually a boon for Google. There is always a chance that the same users might consider switching to the Android platform for a richer and smoother experience.
Indeed, many iPhone users prefer certain Google apps over the ones made by Apple. Google Maps and the Chrome browser are excellent examples. Besides, any smartphone not having a YouTube app would quickly become boring.
Another key benefit that Google gets is that it is able to get tons of data from iPhone users which help the search giant to improve its services and products. Apple’s decision to use its own mapping services was actually meant to lessen its dependence on Google.
